Welcome to the two hundred and sixty-third in this series that is ‘5pm Fiction’.
Late April 2011 I discovered StoryADay.org and the project that is to write 31 stories in 31 days. Anyone who knows me or follows this blog, knows how passionate I am about short stories so my clichéd eyes lit up at this new marvel. And just a few days later there I was, breathing life into new characters. This went on to become (with some editing of course) my 31-story collection eBook Story A Day May 2011. I have since published (as eBooks) the 2012 and 2013 collections, detailed on http://morgenbailey.wordpress.com/books-mine/short-stories/story-a-day-may.
I was nearing completion of the 2012 project when I decided that I didn’t want to stop at the end of May so 5PM Fiction was born. I put a load of prompts on the 5PM Fiction page and today’s was to write a monologue dialogue (no he said / she said) from the prompt of ‘You’ve got to kidding’. Here is my 188-worder.
You’ve Got To Be Kidding
“A stupid one.”
“Better than bulls.”
“They’re weird, these Europeans.”
“Spaniards. They don’t all do it.”
“Just as well.”
“Where’s your sense of adventure, Norman? You’re so…”
“I don’t know.”
“No, Xantippie. What were you going to say?”
“I hate it when you use my full name. It’s like my mother’s telling me off.”
“You’re telling me off, Xanty.”
“No, I’m not. I’m just…”
“Irritated? Pedantic? Dogmatic? Go on, what were you going to call me?”
“You’re just… just… wishy-washy.”
“It was my idea to go somewhere foreign.”
“Yes, but only because the weather’s been so bad at home. Surely your sense of adventure doesn’t stop at the Channel Tunnel.”
“I need a pee.”
“You’ve got to be kidding. You just went.”
“That was over an hour ago. I wouldn’t have had this from Isobel.”
“I wish you’d stayed with her now.”
“So do I. The sex was better and she’s twice your age.”
“And I bet she let you keep your bicycle clips on. That’s not very sexy, is it, Norman?”
