Welcome to the two hundred and sixty-fourth in this series that is ‘5pm Fiction’.
Late April 2011 I discovered StoryADay.org and the project that is to write 31 stories in 31 days. Anyone who knows me or follows this blog, knows how passionate I am about short stories so my clichéd eyes lit up at this new marvel. And just a few days later there I was, breathing life into new characters. This went on to become (with some editing of course) my 31-story collection eBook Story A Day May 2011. I have since published (as eBooks) the 2012 and 2013 collections, detailed on http://morgenbailey.wordpress.com/books-mine/short-stories/story-a-day-may.
I was nearing completion of the 2012 project when I decided that I didn’t want to stop at the end of May so 5PM Fiction was born. I put a load of prompts on the 5PM Fiction page and today’s was to write a story from the one-word prompt of ‘steam’. Here is my 243-worder.
A Different Kind
Norman threw more and more water on the coals hoping that no one would notice, that no one would come in and join him. The weekend away had been Phyllis’ idea, a bonding exercise, as if forty-seven years of marriage wasn’t enough of a bond.
She’d entered every competition she could until she’d finally won the weekend for two at Champneys. They’d been to Tring before but only the Natural History Museum and the old market town itself.
Norman had waited to say how much the stuffed gorilla had looked like Phyllis but knew she wouldn’t have seen the funny side. She hadn’t found anything funny since he’d retired, got under her feet.
So they’d come away and she’d booked massages and facials but Norman wasn’t a hands-on person so he’d opted for the pool and jacuzzi, then spotted the room next door and curiosity got the better of him.
Once he’d opened the door and realised where he was, it was too late to change his mind so he’d sat, towel around his waist pouring on the water until he couldn’t see the walls, could only feel the floor and could only imagine the ceiling. He pictured it made of glass leading out to a perfect blue sky with a plane, a 747 flying overhead taking him away for a different kind of weekend, somewhere more exotic than Tring, somewhere with a different kind of heat… and a different kind of wife.
