Welcome to the two hundred and sixty-sixth in this series that is ‘5pm Fiction’.
Late April 2011 I discovered StoryADay.org and the project that is to write 31 stories in 31 days. Anyone who knows me or follows this blog, knows how passionate I am about short stories so my clichéd eyes lit up at this new marvel. And just a few days later there I was, breathing life into new characters. This went on to become (with some editing of course) my 31-story collection eBook Story A Day May 2011. I have since published (as eBooks) the 2012 and 2013 collections, detailed on http://morgenbailey.wordpress.com/books-mine/short-stories/story-a-day-may.
I was nearing completion of the 2012 project when I decided that I didn’t want to stop at the end of May so 5PM Fiction was born. I put a load of prompts on the 5PM Fiction page and today’s was to write a story from the following sentence start: As their trolleys clashed…. Here is my 203-worder.
Off Her Trolley
The man wielding the other Asda trolley leapt back and clamped his hands over his ears. The other shoppers stood and stared. One said to her husband, “Wouldn’t want to be married to her if she’s going to react like that. Hope she’s not driving.”
The man let go of his ears, pulled his trolley to one side and stepped closer to Josie who had by now stopped screaming but was crying.
The man pulled out a tissue from his jeans pocket, and handed it to her. “I’m sorry,” he said as she nodded and took the tissue.
“It’s OK,” she sobbed. “I should… have… looked… where I was…” She coughed, wiped her mascara-streaked cheeks and handed back the black-smudged tissue.
The man smiled but shook his head. “Thanks, but you keep it. I’m Tom, by the way.”
“Hi.” Josie looked in his trolley which was lined with ready meals, individual juice cartons and small bags of fruit. “Very healthy.”
Tom glanced down. “Oh, yeah. A health kick, you know. It’s that time of the year.”
“I should,” Josie said, tugging on the bottom of her jumper.
“You…” Tom started, but then paused and blushed.
