Complementing my daily blog interviews, today’s Author Spotlight, the one hundred and seventieth, is of Debbie Martin (whose novel ‘Chained Melody’ is free on Kindle today, 14th February: Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.com)
Debbie Martin is a writer, novelist, event organiser and relationship (all kinds) facilitator. She has written two books on relationships, ‘Are You The One’ anecdotally recounts why online dating is not the way to meeting Mr or Ms Right and ‘The Strategy’ is a piece by piece plan to meeting and matching – or at least making more friends.
Debbie is a widow, with two teenage daughters and has tried internet dating herself, which is why she now runs a singles social group www.singlesthatmingle.co.uk, which provides relaxed social situations as an alternative to internet dating or similar. She is also the business events co-ordinator for Wired Wessex, run by the University of Winchester.
She says ‘relationships are any interaction between two or more people. They may have a social, romantic or business spin to them, but whatever they are, they benefit everyone if they are positive, happy and successful. I aim to encourage that through my writing, networking and events I organise.’
Her first novel ‘Chained Melody’ was published in January 2013. She describes it as ‘possibly the most unusual love story you’ll read in 2013’. It is a story about finding courage and the research she conducted to write it was an education all of its own: ‘Despite the sexual revolution, men remain men; but courage is not necessarily about conventional bravery.’
And now from the author herself:
Almost a child of the sixties, I’ve had quite a varied – and sometimes disconcerting – life, until now, but it has always been interesting!
I’m widowed and have two teenage daughters who I’ve brought up largely on my own. Sadly my husband died from cancer some while ago. My daughters are amazing – the eldest, at now 18 has just gone to Oxford University and the younger is 14, and a budding dancer. I am extremely proud of their maturity and strength of character.
Being on my own led me into trying to work out the best way of living a happy life as a singleton. It was because of this that I wrote the two self-help books I’ve published:
- Are You The One? – a humorous look at internet dating,
- The Strategy – ways of meeting people appropriate to you in terms of dating and sociability,
which are shown below. After that I got the writing bug big-time, and not only was my current novel, Chained Melody, written but two more are now just waiting in the wings for all the buzz to settle down before I publish them too. Since being widowed I’ve done many things, including paragliding off a mountain and internet dating – not that dissimilar actually, but the most exciting day of all was the one I held my first book in my hand, hot off the press, still amazed that it had my name on the cover. That excitement never leaves you…
I hope not for me either. Thank you, Debbie. You can find more about Debbie and her writing via…Debbie’s novel ‘Chained Melody’ is free on Kindle today, 14th February: http://www.amazon.com/Chained-Melody-ebook/dp/B00AG39Q74
