Happy April Fool’s Day and welcome to Post-weekend Poetry and the seventieth poem in this series. This week’s piece sees the return of freelance critic, poet and scholar Phillip A Ellis.
An April’s Fool Day Rhyme
It was my dream, when in my school,
to make at times an April’s fool
but I was more the fool most years,
and so I dread when April nears.
I do not open papers lest
some horrid news will get the best,
nor watch a television show
lest my deep ignorance shall show.
And so I hide away in fear
in case my ignorance costs me dear,
but then they say, “You know the rule,
it’s May, you silly April’s fool.”
Thank you, Phillip, I loved that, and great to have you back.
