Welcome to Post-weekend Poetry and the seventy-first poem in this series. This week’s piece is by Mark Hertzberger.
Sinatra spoke to me last night;
At least he said he was Sinatra.
I saw him on my way to the john,
He sat in a corner of my study,
Half in shadow,
Cigarette smoke curling to the ceiling,
Tailored legs crossed,
One polished shoe tip
He spoke of the early days
Standing in snow,
Tour bus gone,
Hollow rooms and empty suits,
Sour breath and Jack Daniels mornings,
His bleeding throat.
He spoke of Ava dark,
Of Ava lost,
Sinatra spoke to me last night,
But didn’t sing a word.

I then asked Mark what inspired this poem…
I think we’ve all wondered what lies behind the personae of celebrities. Frank Sinatra was a legendary character whose bravado and tough guy attitude are still part of American mythology. But what would it have been like to have a heart-to-heart with Sinatra when he was in a less than confident mood? Blue Eyes imagines what this could have been like.
I loved it. Thank you, Mark.
Mark is a member of Poetry Stratford and the Huron Poetry Collective. A selection of his poetry, including Blue Eyes, has been published in the Collective’s second anthology, The Language of Dew and Sunsets.
Mark’s poems have also appeared in Writers Undercover: Tenth Anniversary Issue, published by the Cambridge Writers Collective and in the Kitchener Public Library’s Writers Collective Anthology: Volume 1.
Mark was the winner of the 2008 Poetry Stratford Open Mike Contest and has read his poetry on CJCS Radio in Stratford.
In his other life, Mark is an independent human resources consultant. As you might imagine, writing poetry is a welcome relief from conducting workplace harassment investigations.
Mark resides in Stratford, Ontario with novelist Yvonne Hertzberger.
