Deconstruction of a pop song: One Direction’s Story of My Life

Story of My LifeLike X-Factor runners up One Direction or not… up to now, I’m somewhere in the middle (but I’ve been hooked on this song ever since I heard it), you might find this interesting…

http://arts.nationalpost.com/2013/11/25/pop-psychology-whats-the-story-with-one-directions-story-of-my-life has a wonderful deconstruction of the song ‘Story of My Life’ by One Direction and includes the embedded Vevo video – worth a watch for the down-to-earth, and dare I say touching, special effects.

So for anyone who writes songs, other formats, or if you’re just a fan of words, do take a look and let me know what you think.

PS. Harry’s my favourite. 🙂 And is it me, or does One Direction’s Niall Horan look like Westlife’s Kian Egan?

Morgen, I am a huge 1D fan, I have daughters 12 and 14 so of course I would have to be, and we just yesterday got pre-sale tickets to see them here (New Orleans Superdome) for NEXT AUGUST. (Floor seats!) So needless to say, I loved the video. I think Berry has a little too much time on his hands if he’s dissecting 1D songs (c’mon, they’re not exactly the Beatles) I know he was trying to be funny, and some parts of his article were, but he missed the point of the song I think. My own feeling with pop music is that it’s like candy, meant to be enjoyed without really knowing too much about what’s in it or we’d never eat it. It’s a catchy song that’s easy to sing in the car, so what’s not to like?

Absolutely, Holli. With any piece of writing, especially fiction, two people can have differing interpretations. The thing I love about this song (and there are probably others) is that they take it in turns to sing, and they can sing, unlike a famous 1990s girl group I could mention. 🙂
