Essential Ingredients of Fluent Writing
Writing is a communication medium that uses language signs and symbols to share information. During the writing process, grammar, semantics and vocabulary are used to present ideas to the reader. Most writers focus on presenting their ideas to the reader without giving enough attention to the essential elements of writing. This makes it difficult for the reader to understand the content that the writer is trying to share. For an individual to develop better writing skills, an understanding of the use of words and the development of sound judgment that presents ideas in a clear perspective is required. The following could enable an individual to develop better writing.
Organization of Ideas
According to college paper writers at SolidEssay.com, writing requires the combination of various ideas to present the targeted subject or theme. Before starting the writing process, an individual should collect ideas and the material required, which should then be organized on how they will be presented. Note-taking is a common and simple method used to collect and arrange ideas before writing. A writer may put down personal ideas or ideas retrieved from other sources in an organized format. These ideas could be put down as an outline to guide the writer on the topic of choice. When information is organized, the writer will save a lot of time to write and complete the paper.
Use of Good Grammar
When writing, some writers may make various grammatical mistakes that would make the paper appear disorganized and unfocused. Such papers will make it difficult for a reader to understand the concepts presented by the writer. Common grammatical mistakes involve the use of short forms such as “hasn’t” to mean “has not”, “isn’t” to mean “is not”. A writer should avoid the use of short forms when presenting ideas. There are also commonly mistaken words like their/there, your/you’re. A writer should be able to differentiate such words; for example, “their” is a possessive pronoun, while “there” is used to show a place. The sentence structure is also affected by grammatical mistakes. In case the writer has challenges with grammar, it is important to get assistance, which involves researching on the proper use of grammar. Proofreading will also help the writer identify and correct grammatical mistakes.
Proper use of the Parts of Speech
The parts of speech are eight in number. These include: nouns, pronouns, verbs, prepositions, conjunctions, adverbs, interjections and adjectives. A writer must understand each of these parts of speech and their use in sentences. A misuse of the parts of speech will make the sentences used by the writer grammatically incorrect. The writer should know when and where to use each of these parts of speech; for example, nouns are naming words that represent items such as a toy, school or table. Verbs are words that show an action; examples, run, walk, and read among others. Adjectives are describing words; examples, small, dark, large, and short among others. The correct use of the parts of speech will provide a paper with flowing ideas and easy to read.
Choice of Words
Some writers may use words that they are not sure of their meanings. When a writer is not sure of the meaning of a word, the writer should avoid using that word. There is no sense in using big words for the purpose of sounding smart; not unless, the writer knows the exact meaning of the words and how to use the words in a sentence. A writer should focus on being clear and concise when presenting ideas using a specific choice of words. Fancy words should be avoided, especially, when simple words may be used to pass an idea successfully to the intended audience.
The introductory paragraph is an important part of the paper. This section introduces the reader to the ideas or information a writer is trying to present. The introductory paragraph may start with not many general sentences on the topic. These will familiarize the reader with the intended information that the writer desires to share. In case it is a research paper or an essay, the introductory paragraph should have the thesis statement. The thesis statement is significant as it gives the specific focus of the paper. This statement is also a guide for the writer to ensure that the paper meets the intended requirements.
This section consists of the main ideas that the writer intends to present to the reader. The body should be organized in accordance to the outline. It includes all ideas and pieces of information collected by the writer. The body should move from the general information presented in the introductory paragraph to specific information. In the case of a research paper, this information should relate with the outline and the thesis statement. Each paragraph should consist of an opening and closing sentence. The paragraph should be well-arranged to create a flow in the presentation of ideas, exhausting all information that the writer intends to share with the reader.
The conclusion section provides a final presentation of the writer’s ideas or information. This section puts together general information, which relates to the thesis statement. The information restates the main ideas presented in the paper. When writing a conclusion, the writer should avoid introducing new ideas. Similar to the introduction, the conclusion should frame the writer’s thoughts and bridge the writer’s ideas for the reader. This section allows the writer to have a final say on the topic or subject.
The secret to better writing involves the proper organization of ideas, which ensures the information shared by the writer is well-organized to save on time and provide a flow of the ideas presented. The use of good grammar makes the reader comfortable while reading the paper and makes it easier to understand, as well. The parts of speech could have an impact on the paper when used poorly. A writer must ensure that a proper use of the parts of speech is observed when writing a paper. Writers should use words that they are familiar with the meaning to avoid misguiding the reader. A paper may be organized in the following format: Introduction paragraph, the body, and the conclusion.
