Online marketing tactics for young writers
Writing full time is a viciously difficult profession. I very rarely see a happy writer because any form of writing is like tearing the flesh from your bones; especially if you have to do it every day. Being a full-time writer is difficult because you have to find the motivation to write over and over again until you start climbing the walls with frustration. I know because I have done it and I help authors on market with their services on a regular basis.
How do you get work every day? How do you turn your hobby into a profession? How do you even start paid-writing as a hobby in the first place? First, you need to create an online reputation, build it, cultivate it and maintain it. Here are a few of my best online-marketing tips to help you start and build your reputation.
Build your own website
This should be the first step in your writing endeavor. You need your own website that acts like an online portfolio. Do not get bogged down in details at first. Put yourself in the shoes of your employer. Would you want to read that the writer has been a writer for six years? Or, would you like to see references to every article he or she has ever written? The answer is the former. When you hire a mechanic, you do not ask how many cars he or she has ever fixed.
Put in more than one picture of yourself on your website. It shows that you are human and not a marketing ploy by a writing club. Show a professional one, one with your pet, and one stood beside an expensive car (it doesn’t have to be yours).
Lie on your website
There is a good chance that you are not a world famous writer, which means you may have to tell a few lies on your website. For a start, you should get a photograph of you in an office and pass it off as your regular workplace. The same goes for the posh car you stand in front of in your photo to pretend it’s yours. Do not invent an easily checkable lie such as saying you wrote Glengarry Ross, but it is unlikely people are going to check your freelance clients by contacting them.
Affiliate advertise your website
Consider the terms that employers will write into the Google search engine and use them as your keywords on Google Adwords. You do not have to spend a lot of money if you make sure your adverts are very targeted. You are looking to scare away people that are curious and only attract people that are desperately seeking a freelance writer.
Cruise the freelance websites
Become a big name on as many freelance websites as possible. This is especially important if the websites have rating systems. Do all you can to keep your rating high so new clients can trust you. As you gain more ratings you should be able to demand a slightly higher rate of pay.
Get a social media profile
You will need a Facebook, Google+ and LinkedIn profile. Any other profiles are not going to have the impact you require. There are few people that consider Twitter a great place to check the credentials of a writer.
With that in mind, you need to make sure your social media profiles are clean, professional and not made for personal use (though they should look that way). There is a chance you already have social media profiles, in which case you need to clean them up. Remove all the images that are not becoming of a professional writer and remove any content that will offend your potential employers.
Saturation social media marketing
Now you have your social media profiles you can start saturating the social media networks with your content. Do not fill it with adverts; fill it with the type of content you wish to write. If you want to write fiction, then write short stories and post them on all the profiles you have. Post two or three times per week at different times of the day.
Write new blog articles on your website and post snippets of them to your social media profiles. Write about whatever subject you know best and the subject you wish to write about. Show how good you are (for free) on your blog and social media profiles. Employers want to see how good you are before they hire you. On freelance marketplaces you can bid for work and put a link to your website and website blog to show the employers how good you are. It will add a little credibility your way.
