This page lists free-to-enter ongoing competitions (correct at the time of insertion) as money is often an issue for us authors and this is a quick reference to those that are free and either offer money or just kudos (a placing to add to your CV). Please do email me if you find any errors or know of others, and do check the validity of the competition (i.e. if it’s still running!) before writing something specifically for it…
JANUARY
- Flash Fiction: I run a free monthly competition: a 100-word competition (end of month deadline) where you could win up to three of my online courses or free editing!).

Future themes are available to view on our webpage. The prize is publication of the short story in our Anthology at the end of the year, and an equal share of sale profits of said Anthology. It is an experimental idea for a free to enter writing competition, relying on social media to drive sales of the Anthology and increase the prize. Stories should be 400-1500 words. A short list of three stories will be published on our blog for our readers to vote for a winner. For more information please see http://thewritersnotebookgroup.blogspot.com.

Dear Morgen,
Castle Craig Hospital would like to include our essay competition freely open to students. Would you be as so kind as to place our information on this post?
Castle Craig Hospital would like to invite all interested undergraduate and postgraduate students to enter its International Addiction Research Essay Competition 2018.
This annual competition has been instituted to mark Castle Craig Hospital’s 30th anniversary. We hope it will serve to foster connections between academic institutions and treatment services, and that this will eventually support best practice in the field of addiction treatment.
The top award of £1,000, and runner-up awards of £250 will be a welcome financial assistant to the successful candidates. The competition will be judged by a panel including Professor Jonathan Chick, and Dr. Glynis Read of Castle Craig Hospital.
Please could you take time to share this initiative with students at your university. Full details about the competition are available on this page of our website. https://castlecraig.co.uk/essay Further news and updates will appear regularly on this page, and this link will continue to be updated for competitions in successive years.
We suggest that you link to our competition on social media and any other page you think would be appropriate.
The deadline for submissions is December 31, 2018 with the winners announced on the 30th of April 2019. The winning submissions will be published online by May 1, 2019 on the Castle Craig Hospital website.
As we become increasingly integrated as an international community the exchange of global ideas and dialogue in this field is paramount to addressing the increasing demand for addiction treatment throughout the world. Castle Craig Hospital would be honoured to have you join us in this mission this year and in the future,
Sincerely,
Castle Craig Hospital
