Today welcomes back Alice S Shapiro with a humorous guest blog post about being a writer… and more…
I was about to give up….again! Creative lifestyles are excruciatingly hard to support in the ‘real’ world. A retreat into the alternative creative space (as opposed to ‘spacy’ space) is always a grounded way home for me. It certainly seems backwards and wrong to the norm, but I simply can’t help it. Not wired the same as most, I suppose. I should put these selfie factoids in a bullet list for clearer understanding. Here’s more:
- Don’t fence me in, cutie
- Leave me alone
- Can I play with you for a while?
- Wow, what’s out / in there?
Nevertheless, I managed to have a full life with many amazing accomplishments, like having five books published, including my forthcoming adult coloring book (more about that later) and serving as Poet Laureate of my city, art exhibits, plays produced Off Off and Off Broadway, etc. The flip dark side of all that was a divorce, wrong religious choices, wrong relationship choices, a journey through homeless shelters, etc. God saves.
Second Chances (or maybe 103 chances)
At a Bible study (oh, yes, finally found the one that makes most sense to me), Mrs. Wenck told me about adult coloring books. She always has great ideas. At first, I pooh-poohed the idea in my mind because of personal ego thinking that only “Pure Fine Art” is truth but luckily I have a strong ambition streak. After investigating the adult coloring book craze, I realized Mrs. Wenck was right! I called her a genius.
So, Now Where Am I?
Although the career path was exciting and challenging, it cost me lots in terms of finances, energy, and the ever, never-ending grasp for something else that might work instead. We all die, and get old if we’re lucky. At some point in our fun grasping adventures, the body says “enough, let’s have some ‘inexpensive’ fun now. Late-bloomers like me who learn the hard way eventually get it. This is therefore my current plan… E A S Y.
- Sent images of my paintings (already painted) to publisher
- Sent short poems (already written) to publisher
- Financial freedom rocks.
None, really. Everyone has their own DNA and path to work out. Enjoy, whatever happens.
Thank you, Alice. I couldn’t agree more.
