Bishop John Ivan Cline was born and raised in the British Virgin Islands. Upon completing his secondary education, he migrated to the United States Virgin Islands, in transit to New England, Massachusetts. Upon completion of his tertiary education in Massachusetts, he relocated to New Jersey and began to worship at The New Light Baptist Church in Bloomfield, New Jersey, where Rev Dr. William C. Hall (of blessed memory) presided as the Senior Pastor. Whilst Bishop Cline accepted the Lord as his personal savior before leaving the British Virgin Islands, his call to ministry really began at the New Light Baptist Church, where he served as Youth Director. In this capacity, he launched the Church’s first Ministry to the homeless. He was licensed to preach in 1985 and ordained as a Pastor in 1989.
In February 1993, Bishop Cline relocated to the British Virgin Islands and accepted the invitation to be the senior pastor of The Road Town Baptist Church in the British Virgin Islands shortly thereafter. Within four years under his leadership, land, upon which the construction of the building which would house the Church, had been envisioned, was acquired. In February, 1997, a ground breaking ceremony was held on the acquired site in Duff’s Bottom. Nine months later, in November 1997 the building was dedicated as The New Life Baptist Church where he continues today to serve as the Senior Pastor.
Bishop Cline is a leader with a vision and firmly believes that as children of the living God, we must impact the world, not just spiritually but socially and physically as well. Passionate about this vision, in the year 2000, the idea of a New Life Day Care Centre was downloaded to him. The main focus was to ensure that children in the BVI community were receiving tuition in biblical teachings as well in their academic journey. Hence, upon completion of the main church building, a second building was constructed and dedicated, which houses the New Life Day Care Centre. The day care opened its doors in September 2000 and subsequently expanded to include a pre-school, a year later in 2001. The now New Life Day Care & Learning Centre is geared towards children from 3 months to 7 years old. It adopts the English education system and thereby provides tuition and instruction for pre-primary aged students up to Stage II. The population of the day care and learning centre to date is about 105 students.
In October 2005, he was consecrated to the Office of the Bishop, and inducted into the College of Bishops as a presbyter, adjudicator and an examiner.
With this mindset, in 2011, Bishop Cline acted upon a vision to create such an impact as he embarked on the construction of a recreational facility which would mainly target the youth generation, a generation which he feels is in dire need of attention and rescue. In November 2012, the recreational facility was constructed and dedicated and is now in daily operation. The multi-million dollar facility is approximately 30,000 square feet and houses a gymnasium with modern, state-of-the-art workout equipment, a full-size basketball / volleyball court, a children’s playroom and café, a six lane bowling alley, conference facilities, a ball room and a learning centre. Since its opening, it has hosted many community activities, particularly aimed at young men. As the visionary for the Save the Seed Energy Centre, Bishop Cline believes that the multi-purpose sport facility will help to create an impact in the BVI community by providing a safe and productive environment for young people to congregate and engage in wholesome and enriching activities. He is also the founding member of the New Life Baptist Church Foundation. The foundation was established on 6 October 2011 and it has as its mission the enriching of nations by inspiring wellness and impacting and cultivating healthy communities. Other missionary endeavors of the New Life Baptist Church as spearheaded by Bishop Cline include the commissioning and construction of the facilities which houses the Emanuel Baptist Church in Virgin Gorda, constructing the facilities which houses the Tortola Gracious Academy School Note: Is this the current name? in Nairobi, Kenya and provision of support to the school as well support of the Boys Home in St. Kitts, West Indies.
An avid and dedicated businessman, Bishop Cline is also co-founder and president of Infinite Solutions (formerly Copyright Systems), a successful consumer electronics sales and service business enterprise in the BVI. He is also the founder, president and managing director of Atlantis Solar, a BVI based business company through which he successfully markets, promotes and distributes alternative energy products locally, regionally and internationally.
Known for his love for God, his compassion for people, his undeniable business prowess and acumen, Bishop Cline was elected to the BVI Health Services Authority Board in March 2012 where he presently serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Authority.
When he does relax, tennis provides a welcomed source of repose for him and he also enjoys “dabbling” in the stock market. Bishop Cline attributes his success to the influence of Godly parents, strong family ties, a caring church and a supportive community. He desires to “Pass it on!”
