Flash Fiction Friday 116: Revenge by Jane Risdon

Welcome to Flash Fiction Friday and the one hundred and sixteenth piece in this series. This week’s is a 100-worder by Jane Risdon. This story will be podcasted in episode 36 (with three other stories / with two other stories and some 6-worders) on Sunday 26th January 2014.

Revenge

My only regret is that when the realisation hits him, when all the evidence points to him and his life is in ruins, I shan’t be there to see the look on his face when it dawns on him.

Revenge is a dish best served cold apparently.  Well, I shall be cold in my grave unable to enjoy the moment my murder is pinned on him.  I’ve left clues, irrefutable evidence. No one will ever suspect that I murdered myself, but no matter.  I go to my grave content that for once I have the upper hand.

I asked Jane what prompted this piece and she said…

‘Revenge’ was written for one of my writing group competitions.  We had a theme to write about in 100 words, and this was my effort.

I love writing about crime and wondered how someone would exact revenge upon another in the worst possible manner.  It occurred to me that to be the victim of a crime that was pinned on the person for whom they sought to punish, whom they hated enough to ‘murder’ themselves for, would be a great twist in the tale.

There is the body, indisputably dead, with all clues pointing to the murderer and the victim’s own words convicting him.  I love writing twists in my stories and for me this was delicious; the ultimate dish served cold.  I hope you agree.

Jane Risdon began writing seriously three years ago after a life spent in the International Music Industry where she managed recording artists, record producers and songwriters from all over the world.

Putting her own wishes to write on hold throughout her Music career had unseen benefits in that she has garnered a wealth of material for her stories.  She now has time to write crime and mysteries and has three novels on the go at the moment.  Another is a co-written novel with an award winning author and which she hopes will be published in 2014.

Jane has also had short stories published in various anthologies in aid of charity and has another anthology due out in 2014 involving authors from across the globe.  She also writes flash fiction and her short stories and flash fiction stories have been published and pod-cast on the internet frequently.  These stories are often, but not always, crime related and she often writes humorous short stories based on her observations of characters she has met or knew in the past – heavily disguised of course.

Married to a musician and being involved in the Music Industry for many years, travelling and living in many countries including SE Asia, China, USA and Europe, Jane draws on all her experiences for her writing.
